Top 4 Exercise Excuses

In no particular order, these are the top 4 excuses, in my opinion, for why people fail to exercise.

1. Lack of time

"I am just too busy..."  I have heard this line many times. However, usually when I start asking questions about their schedule we find more than enough time to fit in a workout most days of the week. It doesn't take a huge time commitment to get in a solid workout. If you are efficient and have a plan, then you can have a great workout in as little as 30-45mins. Almost everyone should be able to commit at least 30min to exercise on a daily basis. No this doesn't mean you have to workout 7 days a week, but getting in at least 4 good workouts shouldn't be a scheduling conflict. Organize your schedule, make a commitment, and keep yourself or have someone else keep you accountable to follow through with that commitment.

2. Little to no energy

"I get home from work and I just have no energy..." This is another common excuse. Good news is there are plenty of solutions. Too tired after work to get in a workout? Then why not workout in the morning before work. There are many advantages to working out in the morning. You jump start your metabolism and burn more calories throughout the day. Your mind is fresh and not stressed from a full day of work or personal issues. Also, you knock out the workout first thing and don't have to dread doing it later. Nutrition plays a key role in sustained energy, so making sure you eat a nutritious meal every 3-4 hours is a must to avoid "crashes" in metabolism and feeling lethargic.

3. Dislike exercise

"I really don't enjoying working out..." You know what? There are exercises that I do not enjoy myself. Squats come to mind Sealed However, I do them because I know what they can do for my body and strength. Some things we have to do even though we don't enjoy doing them. Even still, exercise can be made fun! First off, you need to find an activity that you DO enjoy. Even if it is just a casual enjoyment it's a start. Once you have found that activity, then make it tougher to where it will make you break a sweat and raise your heart rate. For instance, if you like walking then try walking at an incline on the treadmill or up a hill. You like dancing or music? Try dancing for longer duration with shorter breaks. Listening to music while you exercise can also be motivating. Get bored easily? You may want to try circuit training where every exercise is different and you mix it up regularly. Joining a recreational sports league in a sport you enjoy playing is another great way to get you moving.

4. Not safe or confident enough to exercise

"I am too overweight...I don't know where to begin... I am afraid I will hurt myself... The gym is overwhelming..."  If exercise is something new to you, then it is definitely worth it to hire a trainer or seek someone you know and trust can show you correct exercise techniques. A little knowledge and experience can go a long way towards gaining confidence in a workout environment. Don't worry about doing a lot in the beginning. The point is just to get going. Start at a level you can handle and then gradually add more when you become comfortable. Training with a trainer or an experienced workout buddy is a great way to start and make sure you are learning safe habits in the gym. ALWAYS lean on the side of caution. If something feels too heavy, awkward, or you feel pain then you should stop immediately and either find a more manageable weight or seek proper instruction and try the exercise at another time.
